Gutters & Downpipes in Melbourne

Cleared, patched, resealed and guarded: rain down the pipe, not the wall.

Clearing, patching, resealing and gutter guards. Not full gutter replacement or roof plumbing.

Gutter and downpipe maintenance keeps the rainwater system on an existing roof working: leaves and debris cleared, leaks patched, joints resealed, gutter guards fitted and downpipes checked, for homeowners, landlords and property managers across Melbourne and Victoria. It is maintenance, not replacement: full gutter replacement, new downpipes and roof plumbing are not part of this service, and a run rusted through or sagging past repair is pointed out, not patched over.

A gutter needs only a few blocked metres to overflow. Water then runs down the fascia, stains render and weatherboards, and pools against the slab or stumps. Under gums and plane trees a gutter can fill between one autumn and the next, and wet mulch rusts steel from the inside.

The same team handles Roof Cleaning & Restoration above the gutter line.

When you need it

  • Water sheets over the gutter edge in heavy rain instead of reaching the downpipe.
  • A corner or joint keeps dripping long after the rain has stopped.
  • Grass is growing in the gutter, a sure sign of compacted mulch.
  • Paint is peeling under the eaves or the fascia is staining.
  • The downpipe gurgles or backs up while the gutter above it is full.

What is included

  • Every run cleared by hand and bagged, not blown onto the garden or down the stormwater.
  • Outlets cleared and each downpipe flushed from the top to confirm it runs.
  • Pinholes and splits patched, and leaking joints, corners and stop-ends cleaned to bare metal and resealed.
  • Gutter guard mesh fitted to the runs under trees, or to the whole roof.
  • Fall checked along each run, and paths and beds below cleaned of what came out.

Our preparation and application process

  1. Step 1: Inspect

We walk the roofline, note blocked runs, rust and failed joints, and show you the photos first.

  2. Step 2: Protect

Paving, pool covers and garden beds under the eaves are covered and tank inlets diverted.

  3. Step 3: Clear and flush

Mulch is scooped out by hand, outlets cleared and every downpipe flushed.

  4. Step 4: Patch and reseal

Leaks and loose joints are dried, cleaned to bare metal, patched or resealed and left to skin over.

  5. Step 5: Guard and clean up

Mesh goes on along the gutter edge, debris is bagged and taken away, and paths below are hosed off.

Materials and systems

Gutter sealant

A flexible, weatherproof sealant for clean, dry joints, corners and stop-ends; it moves with the metal as it heats and cools.

Gutter patches

Small holes and splits bridged with a patch bedded in sealant, where the run around them is still sound.

Gutter guard mesh

A mesh over the gutter, fixed at the roof edge, so leaves blow off while water runs through.

What affects the cost

  • Length of gutter, number of downpipes, and single or double storey.
  • How full the gutters are: a light seasonal clear is quicker than compacted mulch with grass in it.
  • How many joints, corners and holes need patching or resealing.
  • Gutter guard on every run or only under the trees, and the roof type it must suit.
  • Access: steep pitches, solar panels, tight side boundaries and soft ground for ladders.

How long it takes

Clearing and flushing the gutters on a single-storey home typically takes a couple of hours to half a day, depending on length and how packed the mulch is; a double-storey home or a heavily treed block takes longer.

Patching, resealing and fitting guard typically add half a day to a full day, depending on how many joints have failed and how much mesh goes on; sealant needs a dry window to cure.

How to prepare

  • Move cars off the driveway and clear pots from under the eaves.
  • Tell us if downpipes feed a rainwater tank so we can divert the first flush.
  • Point out where you have seen leaks or overflow so we go straight to them.
  • Keep dogs inside while ladders are up and the side paths are in use.

FAQ

Gutters & Downpipes: questions people ask.

Do you replace gutters or do roof plumbing?

No. We clear, patch, reseal and guard the gutters you already have and check that the downpipes run. Replacing gutters or downpipes, changing the fall or altering stormwater connections is roof plumbing, which we do not do.

How often should gutters be cleaned in Melbourne?

At least once a year, and twice on a block with large deciduous or gum trees. Late autumn, after the leaf drop and before the winter rain, is the time to do it. Gutter guard stretches the interval but does not remove it.

How much does gutter cleaning and repair cost?

It depends on the length of gutter, how blocked it is, how many joints need resealing, whether gutter guard is going on and the storey height. We look at the roofline and give a free, no-obligation quote before any work starts.

How long does it take to clean and repair gutters?

Typically a couple of hours to half a day for a single-storey clear and flush, and up to a day more when leaks are patched and guard is fitted, depending on gutter length and whether sealant has dry weather to cure.
