A cosmetic refresh of existing tiles, grout and silicone. No waterproofing or plumbing work.

Tile resurfacing and re-grouting is a cosmetic refresh for sound but dated wall tiles: we recoat them with epoxy tile paint, replace failed grout and renew the sanitary silicone, so the room looks new without a tile leaving the wall. It suits homeowners not ready for a full renovation, landlords between tenants and sellers preparing listing photos.

Melbourne is full of brick-veneer homes with 1970s to 1990s bathrooms wearing burgundy, peach or mission brown tiles. The tiles are usually fine; the colour, stained grout and mouldy silicone date the room. The work is cosmetic: no waterproofing, no plumbing, and paint will not rescue a loose or leaking tile.

When you need it

  • The wall tiles are firmly bonded but their colour dates the whole room.
  • Grout has cracked, crumbled or stained beyond what scrubbing can fix.
  • Silicone around the bath, shower screen or vanity is mouldy or peeling.
  • A rental or home for sale needs a presentable bathroom, not a renovation.
  • A strip-out would mean dust, noise and weeks without the only bathroom.

What is included

  • An honest on-site check of whether your tiles suit recoating.
  • Degreasing of every tile and grout line to remove soap scum and mould.
  • Cutting out and replacing deteriorated grout in your chosen colour.
  • Light abrasion of the glaze and masking of tapware, screens and floors.
  • Epoxy tile paint in the recommended coats over tiles and grout lines.
  • Old silicone removed and a new sanitary bead to bath, shower and basin junctions.

Our preparation and application process

  1. Step 1: Assess and clean

We tap-test for hollow tiles and cracks, then degrease and scrub every surface; soap scum and silicone residue are the main reasons tile paint fails.

  2. Step 2: Regrout

Failed grout is raked out, replaced and left to cure before anything goes over it.

  3. Step 3: Abrade and mask

The glaze is lightly abraded for adhesion; tapware, screens and floors are masked and sheeted.

  4. Step 4: Apply

Epoxy tile paint goes on in thin, even coats with the correct recoat window between them.

  5. Step 5: Cure and finish

Once the coating has hardened we fit new silicone, strip the masking and leave the room clean.

Materials and systems

Epoxy tile paint

A tough coating that bonds to glazed ceramic and porcelain wall tiles, in white or a tinted neutral.

Replacement grout

Matched to joint width and colour, used where old grout is cracked, powdery or missing.

Sanitary silicone

A flexible, mould-resistant sealant for the wet joints around bath, shower and basin, always replaced and never painted over.

What affects the cost

  • The square metres of tile and the number of rooms.
  • How much grout needs cutting out and replacing rather than coating over.
  • Tile condition: soap scum, old paint or chipped edges add preparation time.
  • How many fittings and edges need masking; a shower recess takes longer than a splashback.
  • Whether vanity resurfacing or new hardware is done on the same visit.

How long it takes

One bathroom or splashback typically takes two to four days on site, depending on how much grout is replaced and how many coats the tiles need; new grout cures overnight before coating.

After the final coat the shower typically stays dry for a few days, depending on the product and the weather; fresh silicone needs around a day before it sees water.

How to prepare

  • Clear the vanity top, shower caddies and shelves so every tile is reachable.
  • Take down shower curtains, mirrors and anything hanging on tiled walls.
  • Work out which bathroom you will use while this one cures.
  • Pick tile and grout colours before we arrive; white and light grey lift a small room.

FAQ

Tile Resurfacing: questions people ask.

Can you paint over bathroom tiles instead of replacing them?

Yes, sound glazed wall tiles can be recoated with epoxy tile paint instead of being ripped out, as long as they are firmly bonded, clean and crack free. Recoating is cosmetic: it will not fix a leaking shower or a loose tile, and we say so upfront.

Is tile paint a good idea on floor tiles or in a shower?

On floors, usually not. Grit and mopping wear a coating far faster than a glazed tile, so painted floors soon look tired and are better replaced through our Tiling & Splashbacks service. Shower walls recoat well; shower floors are high-wear and we advise against them.

How much does it cost to resurface and regrout bathroom tiles?

It depends on the square metres of tile, how much grout needs replacing, the tile condition and how many fittings we mask around; a shower recess takes more preparation than a plain splashback. We quote in person for free, with no obligation.

How long does tile painting and regrouting take?

Typically two to four days on site for one bathroom, depending on how much grout is cut out and how many coats the tiles need. Then add cure time with the shower kept dry; we confirm the exact period before we leave.

Can you regrout without painting the tiles?

Yes. If only the grout and silicone have failed, we rake out the old grout, regrout in a matching or contrasting colour and replace the silicone, leaving the tiles untouched.
