Cosmetic Pool Shell Repairs in Melbourne

Patch, fill and level the shell before the new coating goes on.

Surface repairs before recoating. Structural cracks and leaks are a job for a pool builder or leak specialist.

Cosmetic pool shell repairs patch surface cracks, fill render hollows, repair minor fibreglass osmosis blisters and level the shell so a concrete or fibreglass pool is sound and even before it is recoated. They suit pool owners across Melbourne and Victoria whose shell is basically healthy but crazed, chipped or lightly blistered.

We repair the surface, not the structure. A crack through the shell, a pool that is losing water, or render failing across the whole interior belongs with a pool builder, a leak specialist or a full re-interior, which we do not do. We say so at the quote rather than patch over it, because a coating is only as even and as durable as what sits beneath it.

When you need it

  • Fine cracks or crazing in the render or old coating, while the pool still holds water normally.
  • Render that sounds hollow or drummy when tapped, or has lifted from the concrete behind it.
  • Small raised bumps in a fibreglass gelcoat, usually below the waterline, that have not spread.
  • Old patches, chips and rough spots that would show through a new coating unless levelled first.

What is included

  • A walk-through of the drained shell that maps every defect and separates cosmetic from structural.
  • Tap testing the render for hollow sections you cannot see, so they are cut out, not coated over.
  • Opening up cracks so the filler keys into sound material instead of sitting on the surface.
  • Grinding out minor osmosis blisters, drying the laminate and rebuilding the area with resin and filler.
  • Feathering every repair flush so no ridge or dip shows once the pool is painted.

Our preparation and application process

  1. Step 1: Drain, wash and mark up

Once the pool is drained and washed down, we let the shell dry enough to read it and chalk every crack, hollow and blister before any grinding starts.

  2. Step 2: Protect the surrounds

Coping, tiles and paving are covered, and the skimmer box and fittings are shielded from grinding dust.

  3. Step 3: Cut back and fill

Cracks are ground into a shallow V, drummy render is removed to a firm edge and blisters are ground out until the laminate is clean and dry, then each repair is vacuumed and filled.

  4. Step 4: Cure, level and clean up

Repairs dry right through, are sanded flush and the dust is vacuumed out, leaving the shell ready for acid washing and surface prep or the first coat.

Materials and systems

Crack patching filler

A pool-grade filler worked into opened-up cracks in concrete and render shells and sanded flush so the line does not show through the coating.

Repair render for hollows

A cement-based render that rebuilds drummy or lifted sections and bonds them back to the shell.

Fibreglass resin and filler

Rebuilds ground-out osmosis blisters once the laminate is fully dry and restores a smooth gelcoat ready for chlorinated rubber, two-pack epoxy or polyurethane.

What affects the cost

  • How many cracks, hollows and blisters there are and how far they are spread across the shell.
  • Whether the shell is rendered concrete or fibreglass, since each needs different materials and tools.
  • How deep the drummy render goes before a firm edge is found.
  • Whether the repairs are booked with pool resurfacing and painting or as a separate visit.

How long it takes

On site, cosmetic shell repairs typically take one to three days, depending on the number of defects, the size of the pool and whether it is concrete or fibreglass. A handful of hairline cracks is a short job; several drummy sections plus a run of blisters takes longer because each area is cut back, dried and filled in turn.

Fillers and repair render then typically need several days to dry right through before coating, and longer through a cool, damp Melbourne winter, so the sequence from draining to painting is usually planned across a week or more.

How to prepare

  • Do a bucket test first: if the pool loses more water than the bucket, book a leak detection specialist before any cosmetic work.
  • Ask us about timing the drain, because an empty shell should not sit for days in wet ground before repairs begin.
  • Photograph any crack or bump that worries you, with a coin for scale, and keep children and pets away from the empty shell until the coating is finished.

FAQ

Pool Shell Repairs: questions people ask.

What is an osmosis blister on a fibreglass pool?

An osmosis blister is a small raised bump in the gelcoat of a fibreglass pool, formed when water slowly passes through the surface and collects in tiny pockets in the laminate beneath. The trapped water builds pressure, pushes the gelcoat outward and may weep a sharp-smelling fluid when the blister is opened. Minor, isolated blisters are ground out, dried and filled before recoating; widespread blistering needs a fibreglass pool specialist.

Can you fix a crack in my pool, or is it structural?

We repair surface cracks, not structural ones. A surface crack is shallow, sits in the render or old coating and the pool still holds water, so we open it, fill it and level it before recoating. A crack through the shell, with one side higher than the other, that keeps reopening or comes with water loss needs a pool builder or a leak detection specialist, and patching will not stop a leak.

What is drummy render?

Drummy render has lost its bond to the concrete shell behind it and sounds hollow when tapped. It can look fine, but a coating over it will crack and flake as soon as the loose section moves, so we tap test the whole shell and cut out and refill any drummy areas first. If most of the shell is drummy, that is a full re-interior, which we do not do.

How much do cosmetic pool shell repairs cost?

It depends on how many cracks, hollows and blisters need attention, how deep the drummy render goes, whether the shell is concrete or fibreglass and how much levelling is needed. Repairs done in the same visit as resurfacing share the draining, protection and clean-up with the painting. We inspect the drained shell and give you a free, no-obligation quote that lists what is cosmetic and what is not.

How long does pool shell repair take before the pool can be painted?

Typically one to three days of repair work, then several days of curing before the coating goes on, depending on the number and depth of repairs and the weather. Render fill and fibreglass repairs must be dry all the way through or the coating will lift, so we plan repair, cure and paint dates as one sequence to keep the pool empty for as short a time as possible.
