Interior Painting in Melbourne

Whole rooms, whole homes, feature walls and trim: one team, one clean finish.

Interior painting is the repainting of walls, ceilings, doors, architraves, skirting boards, staircases and feature walls, for homeowners refreshing a room, landlords between tenants, and shops or offices wanting a cleaner space. Peak Surfaces paints interiors across Melbourne and Victoria with one team, so the people who cut in your ceilings also finish your trim.

Whole-room and whole-home repaints bring every surface back to one consistent finish, from flat ceiling to crisp enamel skirting. Smaller jobs change one thing well: a feature wall in a deeper colour, chipped doors brought back to clean white, or a staircase with stained treads against freshly painted risers and balusters.

When you need it

  • Walls and ceilings have dulled or scuffed and a clean coat would lift the room.
  • You are selling or leasing and want a neutral, consistent finish before the photos.
  • Doors, architraves and skirting are chipped and yellowed while the walls are fine.
  • You want a feature wall or new colour scheme without a renovation.

What is included

  • Nail holes, hairline cracks and dents filled; larger repairs come under Surface Prep & Plaster Restoration.
  • Ceilings cut in by hand and rolled in flat paint to hide roller marks.
  • Walls in low-sheen or washable finishes, matched to how each room is used.
  • Doors, architraves, skirting and stair balusters in enamel for a hard, wipeable edge.
  • Feature walls masked so the colour change lands exactly on the corner you chose.
  • Daily tidy-up and a final clean, masking removed and furniture put back.

Our preparation and application process

  1. Step 1: Clear and cover

Furniture moved to the centre and covered; floors, benches and fittings protected before sanding starts.

  2. Step 2: Fill, sand and seal

Holes and cracks filled and sanded flush, old gloss scuffed so enamel grips, stains sealed so they cannot bleed through.

  3. Step 3: Cut in, roll and recoat

Ceilings first, then walls, then trim: edges brushed, open areas rolled while the edge is wet, second coat once the first has dried.

  4. Step 4: Clean up and hand over

Masking off, floors vacuumed, furniture back, then a daylight walk-through with you to check every surface.

Materials and systems

Low-sheen acrylic for walls

The everyday finish for bedrooms and living rooms; a slight sheen softens light and hides small flaws.

Washable low-sheen for busy walls

Takes a damp cloth without going shiny; suits hallways, kids' rooms, kitchens and rentals.

Flat ceiling paint

A matt finish that hides roller marks and stops light raking across the ceiling.

Water-based enamel for trim

A harder coating that gives doors, architraves, skirting and balusters a crisp, wipeable edge.

What affects the cost

  • Floor area and ceiling height: tall walls and stairwells need more paint, time and sometimes planks.
  • Amount of trim: doors, architraves, skirting and balusters are slow brush work compared with open walls.
  • Surface condition: a light sand is quicker than patched, stained or old gloss surfaces.
  • Colour change: a deep colour over a light wall, or light over dark, can need extra coats.

How long it takes

A single room typically takes one to two days and a whole three-bedroom home one to two weeks, depending on trim, colour change, furniture and ceiling height. Wall paint typically takes its second coat within hours, while enamel on doors and trim needs longer between coats and keeps hardening for days after it feels dry, so doors are best left ajar at first.

How to prepare

  • Choose colours and sheen levels beforehand and test sample pots on the actual wall in daylight and lamplight.
  • Take down pictures, curtains and mirrors, clear shelf tops and move small or fragile items out; we shift and cover larger furniture.
  • Tell us about damp patches, past leaks or flaking so repairs can be planned rather than found on the day.

FAQ

Interior Painting: questions people ask.

How much does interior painting cost in Melbourne?

There is no set rate per room; the price follows the size and condition of the job. The main factors are floor area and ceiling height, trim, preparation, colour change and whether the home is furnished. We measure on site and give a free, no-obligation quote listing what is included.

How long does it take to paint the inside of a house?

A single room typically takes one to two days and a whole home one to two weeks, depending on room count, trim and preparation. We work room by room so most of the house stays usable throughout.

What is the difference between low-sheen and washable paint?

Low-sheen describes the look of the finish; washable describes how well it takes cleaning. Standard low-sheen hides small flaws but can go shiny where it is scrubbed. Washable finishes take a damp cloth without burnishing, so they suit hallways, kids' rooms, kitchens and rentals.

Can you paint a staircase that has stained timber treads?

Yes, risers, balusters, stringers and handrails can be painted while the treads stay stained or clear-coated. The treads are masked and protected during painting, and any new stain or clear coat is handled under our Specialty Finishes service.
