Exterior painting is the preparation and repainting of a home's outside surfaces, from weatherboards, masonry and render to fascias, eaves, window frames and fences, for homeowners whose paint has faded or begun to peel, landlords readying a rental for new tenants, and small businesses with a shopfront, in Melbourne and across Victoria. One crew handles the lot, from the cladding to the fence line.

Most of a good exterior job is preparation. Summer sun chalks old paint and winter rain lifts what is left, so we wash, scrape, sand, prime and fill before any colour goes on. Timber, render and trims each get their own system, and colour and finish are chosen with you.

## When you need it

- Sun-facing walls have gone chalky and faded, or weatherboards are flaking to bare timber.
- Render or masonry shows hairline cracks, powdery patches or paint peeling in sheets.
- Fascias, eaves or window frames are peeling and sills hold water instead of shedding it.
- The fence, verandah steps or deck edge has greyed off and no longer matches the house.

## What is included

- Washing of every surface to remove dirt, chalk, mould and loose paint.
- Scraping and sanding of failed paint, priming of bare timber, sealing of chalky render.
- Filling of splits, nail holes and hairline cracks, and recaulking around frames.
- Two finish coats on walls, fascias, eaves, window frames, sills and fences.
- A foot-traffic coating on verandah steps and deck edges.
- Masking of glass, brickwork, paving and gardens, and a clean site each day.

## Our preparation and application process

1. **Wash and inspect.** Every surface is washed to lift chalk and mould and checked for soft timber and cracked render; anything rotted through is flagged, not painted over.
2. **Scrape, sand and fill.** Failed paint is taken back to a firm edge, bare areas primed, splits and cracks filled and sanded.
3. **Protect the surrounds.** Glass, bricks, paving and plants are masked or covered, with drop sheets wherever we work.
4. **Apply the coats.** Undercoat where needed, then two finish coats by brush, roller or spray, never onto a hot or damp surface.
5. **Harden and hand over.** Coatings harden before gates, steps and frames see heavy use, then masking and rubbish leave with us.

## Materials and systems

- **Flexible exterior acrylic:** A water-based topcoat over primer for weatherboards and paling fences, chosen because it moves with the timber instead of cracking.
- **Breathable render and masonry coating:** A sealer on chalky or porous surfaces, then a masonry acrylic that lets moisture escape rather than trapping it in the wall.
- **Trim enamel and step coatings:** Harder enamel for fascias, eaves trims, window frames and sills; a coating made for horizontal timber on verandah steps and deck edges.

## What affects the cost

- Single-storey or double-storey, which decides ladder, platform or scaffold access.
- How much old paint has failed, since flaking boards take far more scraping and priming than a sound wall.
- The amount of fiddly brush work on window frames, trims, gates and fence palings.
- Which way the walls face, because north and west elevations usually need the most preparation.

## How long it takes

A single-storey weatherboard home typically takes about a week, depending on how much scraping and priming the boards need, the number of windows and trims, and the weather. Sound render or brick is often quicker and a double-storey home with trims all round runs longer.

Exterior acrylics are typically touch-dry within hours, but the film keeps toughening for days, longer in cold or damp weather, so steps, gates and deck edges get a few days before heavy use.

## How to prepare

- Trim back shrubs touching the walls or fence, unlock side gates, and move pots and furniture away from the house.
- Flag anything you have noticed, such as soft timber or a damp patch under a window.
- Keep windows closed while the frames are painted, and keep pets away from ladders and wet paint.

## Exterior Painting: questions people ask

### How much does exterior house painting cost in Melbourne?

It depends on the home's size and height, how much old paint has failed, and how much frame, trim and fence work there is. Flaking boards cost more to prepare than sound render. We look at every surface in person and give you a free, no-obligation quote.

### How long does exterior painting take?

A single-storey home typically takes about a week; a double-storey home or one with a lot of flaking paint takes longer. Preparation and weather stretch a job, since paint cannot go onto damp or very hot surfaces.

### Is painting weatherboards different from painting render?

Yes, they need different preparation and coatings. Weatherboards move with the seasons, so loose paint is scraped back, bare patches primed and a flexible acrylic applied. Render and masonry chalk with age, so they are washed hard, sealed where powdery and given a breathable coating that will not trap moisture.

### When is the best time to paint a house exterior in Melbourne?

Mild, dry spring and autumn weather is ideal, but with planning it can be done most of the year. In summer we follow the shade around the house; in winter we start once the dew has lifted and hold off if rain is due.
