# Patio & Outdoor Walkway Coatings in Melbourne

> Slip-resistant, colourfast coatings for patios, paths and pool walkways.

Part of [Epoxy Flooring & Seamless Coatings](https://peaksurfaces.com.au/services/epoxy-flooring).

Patio and outdoor walkway coating is a slip-resistant, UV-stable polyurethane or polyaspartic finish applied over existing outdoor concrete, for patios, garden paths, pool-adjacent walkways and verandah steps that have gone grey, stained or slick. It adds colour and grip and hoses clean.

Outdoor concrete needs a different resin from a garage floor. Standard epoxy is tough but not UV-stable, so in direct sun it yellows, chalks and dulls, often within a single summer. Polyurethane and polyaspartic hold their colour outside, which is why Peak Surfaces uses them across Melbourne and Victoria from its Coolaroo base.

## When you need it

- Patio concrete gone patchy grey, with rust rings and leaf stains that pressure washing cannot lift.
- A path to the pool, shed or clothesline that turns slick when wet.
- Verandah or porch steps with smooth, worn treads that are unsafe for kids and older visitors.
- A painted or epoxy-coated outdoor area that has yellowed, chalked or started peeling.

## What is included

- Slab inspection for cracks, spalling, old coatings, moisture and drainage.
- Diamond grinding to open the concrete and strip old sealers and paint.
- Filling of minor cracks, chips and spalled edges, plus primer where needed.
- Slip-resistant aggregate broadcast into the coating, graded to how the area is used.
- UV-stable polyurethane or polyaspartic topcoats in a solid colour to suit the brick, render or decking.

## Our preparation and application process

1. **Inspect and moisture-test.** We check for hollow spots, old coatings and stains, and moisture-test the slab, since damp ground pushes vapour through a coating.
2. **Protect the surrounds.** Render, balustrades, pool fencing, garden beds and thresholds are masked and sheeted before grinding starts.
3. **Grind, repair and coat.** Grinding takes the slab back to clean, open concrete and cracks are filled flush. Then primer where needed, the base coat with slip-resistant aggregate broadcast while wet, and the UV-stable topcoat.
4. **Cure and clean up.** The area stays cordoned off until walkable. Masking comes off, slurry and packaging leave with us, and furniture returns after full cure.

## Materials and systems

- **UV-stable polyurethane coating:** A flexible, colourfast topcoat that holds its colour in direct sun, moves with the slab through the seasons and resists sunscreen and pool splash.
- **Polyaspartic coating:** A fast-curing UV-stable resin laid in thin, dense coats. It takes foot traffic within hours and tolerates a wider application temperature range, which suits a short weather window.

## What affects the cost

- The area in square metres and how many steps, edges and zones need hand detailing.
- How much grinding and repair the slab needs; a failed coating takes longer to strip than sound concrete.
- The system: polyaspartic shortens the job but usually costs more as a material than polyurethane.
- The texture grade, any contrasting border, and access for the grinder through side gates and stairs.

Prices are not published because every surface is different. Quotes are free and without obligation.

## How long it takes

Typically two to four days on site, depending on the area, the grinding and repair needed, and the weather. Repairs fill the first day, the base coat the next, and the topcoat once the base is ready to recoat.

Polyaspartic is typically walkable within hours and polyurethane the next day, with full hardness after several days depending on temperature and humidity. Dew, rain or a hot slab will mark an uncured coat, so we book each coat into a dry window.

## How to prepare

- Clear furniture, pots, barbecues and door mats, and tell us what cannot be moved.
- Hose off loose dirt and leaves; stains and old coatings are the grinder's job.
- Plan another route to the bins, clothesline or pool gate, and keep pets and kids off until we confirm it is walkable.

## Patio & Walkway Coatings: questions people ask

### Why can't you just put epoxy on my patio?

Because standard epoxy is not UV-stable: in direct sun it yellows, chalks and dulls within months. It belongs on a garage or workshop floor; outdoors we use polyurethane or polyaspartic, which hold their colour in full sun.

### How much does it cost to coat a concrete patio or path?

It depends on the area, the slab's condition and the system, so we measure and quote each job rather than publish a rate. The drivers are square metres, grinding and repair, polyurethane versus polyaspartic, texture grade and access. We inspect the slab, then give a free, no-obligation quote.

### How long does it take to coat a patio or walkway?

Typically two to four days on site, plus curing before full use. Polyaspartic takes foot traffic within hours of the final coat; polyurethane is typically walkable the next day and fully hard after several days.

### Will the coating be slippery when wet?

No, slip-resistant aggregate is broadcast into the coating and graded to the area: firmer on walkways and step treads, finer on a dining patio so it sweeps clean. Tell us how the area is used and we will recommend the grade.

### When is the best time to coat outdoor concrete in Melbourne?

Any settled, dry spell with mild temperatures, usually spring, autumn or a cool stretch of summer rather than a heatwave or a wet winter week. The slab must be dry through, above the dew point and cool enough for the coating to level before it skins.
